Some villians had brought Medusa back to life and Diana went out to stop her and destroy Medusa before she could use modern technology to turn the whole world to stone. During the battle the helmet that was blocking/protecting from making eye contact with Medusa got knocked off, so Diana grabbed one of the snakes from Medusa's head that she had already cut of and intentually blinded herself so that she could destroy Medusa

BUT, I thought Medusa couldn't harm women :)

No Medusa's glance turns women to stone as well as men. Athena placed a spell so that "no woman can enter" Medusa's cave as a way to protect women from being harmed by Medusa.
