Back up! Back up! Back up!!!!!

Sat Jul 21, 2012, 2:38 AM
I just accidently flattened, cropped and saved over a master PSD file, meaning I only had the small cropped section left of an entire cover...

"*THIS* is why you do regular backups people..." he says, as he grabs the external HDD and fires up the backup folder in question, copies and pastes back onto C:/.

*nods* Damm straight!

cheers
Sean

I'm absolutely compulsive about versioning, I can have 30 versions of a file, and even so, I've had a major disk crash a few days ago :/ I've finally decided to go for a dropbox account with 100 Gig storage + infinite versions/deletions recovery. Maybe you could give it a shot...

Funny story to share: One of my clients, a publisher, recently lost 8 months of corrections to one of their books because someone saved over their "Master" file.... Yes, that's right - they actually had a single "Master" file. No versioning - no backup system - no redundant process or server. They allowed every writer to work directly off a single master file from the server.... REMOTELY!

Indeed. Save often and do multiple file versions.

Exactly! I'm not a pro, but I keep two copies of my work on my main computer, and another copy on an external HD . . . plus all my photoshop data is set to get backed up every 6 hours . . . I've run into problems with power outages/save mistakes . . . it seems you can never be too careful!

Two words: version control. It ultimately increases the among of HDD space you use, bu it saves your @$$ more often than not.

I almost lost my data a couple of weeks ago... Now I'm looking for some external HD to keep me away from a heart attack.

That's why I keep all of my working files in dropbox. There's this awesome feature of recovering a previously saved version of a file. It's saved me a couple times now when I've flattened a file and saved over my original. You might want to check it out.
